Abstract: This study investigated the distribution of excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT) subtypes 1-3 in the mouse liver, kidney, and intestine. The study discovered that EAAT3 protein levels are high in the brush borders of the distal small intestine and renal proximal tubules. No significant levels of EAAT1 or EAAT2 were detected in the mouse kidney or intestine. In the liver, only EAAT2 and its two C-terminal splice variants were expressed, located in the plasma membranes of hepatocytes around the central veins. These hepatocytes also express glutamine synthetase. Conditional deletion of EAAT2 in the liver did not result in noticeable neurological issues or fatty liver development.
